About the Coaches:
Head Coach: Carl Barling
Morris Catholic High School is proud to welcome Coach Carl Barling to our athletic program, bringing with him more than three decades of experience in the game of hockey as both a coach and an official. Coach Barling is widely respected across the New Jersey hockey community for his deep knowledge of the game, his commitment to player development, and his ability to build strong, character-driven teams.
Coach Barling currently serves as Head Coach for the Jersey Colts, where he has led a competitive and disciplined program since 2014. His coaching philosophy emphasizes skill development, teamwork, and accountability, while creating an environment where student-athletes can grow both on and off the ice. Previously, he served as Head Coach for the New Jersey Colonials and the New Jersey Rockets. Across all levels, he has consistently focused on developing hockey IQ, confidence, and a strong sense of team culture.
In addition to his coaching accomplishments, Coach Barling has an extensive and distinguished career as an official. A certified USA Hockey official since 1994, he has been selected to officiate at three USA Hockey National Tournaments. He is also a long-standing member of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association, officiating high school games throughout the Metro NY/NJ area, and serves as an off-ice official for the NHL’s New Jersey Devils.
Coach Barling’s leadership extends beyond the rink. He has served as Referee-in-Chief for the New Jersey Youth Hockey League, First Vice President of NIHOA, and continues to shape the game as a USA Hockey seminar instructor. His certifications include USA Hockey Level 4 Coach and Level 3 Official.
At Morris Catholic, Coach Barling will bring a wealth of experience, a passion for teaching the game, and a strong alignment with our mission of developing the whole student. We are excited for the impact he will have on our student-athletes and the continued growth of our hockey program.
Welcome to Morris Catholic, Coach Barling.
