SUMMER PROGRAMS 09

SUMMER PROGRAMS 09

Reading Day

Each year, just before final exams, the school is closed to classes for the day so that all students have the opportunity to come into school and spend time with the teachers to get much needed help before the exams. Teachers are in the building from 8am-1 pm in their classrooms so that students can have access to them and have all their questions answered. This is the perfect time to get those troublesome math questions answered or get caught up on an assignment or a lab.

So rise and shine.  Get to school so that you can take advantage of this great opportunity to receive extra help just in time for your exams.  You can come in anytime during the hours of 8-1.

Remember, no uniforms!!!!!!!

SAT and  ACT Prep Program

Throughout the school year parents will often ask me to recommend prep classes for the students to take to increase their scores on the ACT and the SAT. Although I do not recommend one program over another, I do have a limited list of some proven courses. Please keep in mind the following things when shopping for a course. Yes I did say shopping. All courses do not promise the same things and some may be less expensive than others. It is important to do your investigating earlier than later. It will pay in the long run.

Evaluate your child’s learning patterns. Do they work well in a group situation or would individual tutoring be better? One hour with one student can go much further than a student registered in a large group of 20 or more.

Take your student with you when you  interview  the director responsible  for the guidelines of the program.

Stick to the smaller group sessions if possible. Some have ten or less.

Inquire about  the follow-up when scores are received. Some programs guarantee a point spread and will give additional tutoring if the scores are not met.

If your student has a close friend that he/she works well with, try to get a tutor for the two students and split the cost.

Governors School Applications

The applications for the Governor’s school are now being accepted. This is an exciting educational opportunity for juniors.

What is Governor’s School? When is it and how do I get more information to see if my child may be a candidate? The exact dates for each program with the exception of Stockton, are listed below. The exact dates for the School of the Environment has not been published.

The Governor’s School Program consists of five different schools:

· The Governor’s School of Engineering and Technology at Rutgers University

· The Governor’s School on the Environment at Richard Stockton State College

· The Governor’s School of International Studies at Ramapo College

· The Governor’s School of Public Issues at Monmouth University

· The Governor’s School in the Sciences at Drew University

Approximately 90 scholars will be selected from throughout New Jersey for each of the schools listed above. Each  Governor’s school focuses on a subject area so each applicant needs supporting documentation that attests to the academic aptitude in that genre. The criteria used to select the finalists includes PSAT test scores, strength of their academic schedule, rank and grade point average and teacher recommendations. The area of the school’s concentration is implied in the specific school’s name at each university campus listed above.  When a student is selected, room and board at each of the schools is free of charge. Morris Catholic can nominate one student to each school. Applications are available in the guidance office from Mrs. Hatcher.

*It is important to know that Governor School candidates are sought after by the top schools in the state for acceptance and scholarship.

All programs are during the summer months as follows:

Rutgers begins on June 28, 2009                        Ramapo will begin on July 5, 2009

Stockton’s date has not yet been determined.             Monmouth will begin on July 12, 2009

Drew will begin on July 12, 2009

How do I become a candidate?

  • There are three ways: nominate yourself or have your parents nominate you.
  • Teachers can nominate academically talented students
  • Nomination through the selection committee.

Once all nominations are complete and the preliminary applications received, a school committee will select the most qualified students to compete at the county level.

College Without Tears Workshop

In order to minimize the frustration and anxiety connected with the college application process, the Guidance Department at Morris Catholic will be offering an opportunity for Parents and Juniors to attend a question and answer session to be held on November 13th at 7pm is the school library. The presenter will cover issues dealing with the college selection process, the interpretation of test scores, the use of the common application, applying early action or early decision, deciding which entrance test to take and other relevant topics. Useful handouts will also be available.

If you have not had a son or daughter attend college and go through the selection process, then this meeting is a must. The College With Tears Workshop will be extremely informative and helpful. This will be the only time that this type of workshop will be offered. Mark this important date on your calendars.

Attention Juniors Opportunity  at American University

American University’s Washington Summer Scholars

Washington Summer Scholars is a unique opportunity for exceptional high school students to build their academic resume while developing study skills that will help them prepare for and succeed in college.  Students also learn leadership skills and engage in challenging and thought-provoking discussions with other student leaders as well as with prominent professionals and leaders in the field.

Students reside on the American University Tenley campus and learn from respected AU professors, so they get a taste of small town college life while enjoying the many amenities of a world-class university in our nation’s capital.

Additionally, students will get a head start and marked advantage in the competitive college admissions process by earning 3 college credits from American University, while still in high school.

The Washington Summer Scholars program is an invitational program and seeks students of the highest caliber.  There is no question that students who attend will join an impressive delegation of students who will continue to distinguish themselves at the college level and beyond.

Seniors Ronak Mistry and Jen Smith

Seniors  Ronak Mistry and Jen Smith know first hand what Governor’s School is all about. According to both students, it was the opportunity of a lifetime.

Last December, both students submitted their applications in the hopes they would be selected. Ronak became a finalist for the Governor's School of the Sciences to be held at Drew University and Jennifer was accepted to the Governor's School of the Arts which was held at The College of New Jersey.

Both students spent the better part of three weeks in an intensive academic experience honing their skills. The fact that these seniors were able to compete and be selected for this prestigious program will bode well for them at college application time.

If you are a junior this year and might be interested in being a candidate for the Governor’s School Program, stop by and see Mrs. Hatcher. More information will follow when the new applications are distributed to the high schools at the end of October. In the meantime, go up to Ronak and Jen and ask them about their experience this summer. I know they would be very happy to take the time to chat.

MC at Boys State

Each year, American Legions throughout the state sponsor  boys to attend the Boy’s State Leadership Program held at Rider College. Boys are selected by their schools based on strength of character, community commitment and a personal interest in government and democracy then chosen by their town American Legion to be sponsored for the week at Boys State.

The Boys State experience is centered around a program that exposes and teaches young men the principles of state government and how they can be instrumental in changing the face of legislation through leadership and knowledge.

Tim Butchko, Austin Eschbacher and John French traveled to Rider University for this week long experience. We can expect these boys to bring back to MC  and their community a better understanding of leadership.   As young leaders, we look forward to seeing  John, Tim and Austin taking active leadership in school sports and their communities.

Congratulation on the completion of this valuable program.

UAB

Nico St. Ana, Bill Harding, Lauren Gallagher, Kim Podlovits, Karina Gonzales, & Mike Schwarzenback

Six current Seniors were selected to attend Understanding American Business(UAB) this summer.  UAB is one of the best chances to experience, hands on, the inner workings of a real business.

Through Understanding American Business,  an organization committed to the enrichment of young people, a carefully selected group of juniors from throughout Morris County competed for a slot in this four day work experience.   These selected  Juniors were instructed by a team of Corporate America, businessmen with decades of invaluable work experience.

Seniors Lauren Gallagher, Bill Harding, Karina Gonzales, Kim Podlovits, Mike Schwarzenbach and Nico Sta Ana were exposed to marketing, finance, accounting, advertising and the concept of team work. Working as teams, the students were merged with the students selected from other high schools in the county. They were then assigned business plans and collaborated and expanded upon them. Plans were then ranked and awarded based on how the teams developed them.  MC Senior  Bill Harding was part of the group that won first prize for their business plan presentation.   The students also  sat through classroom lectures on relevant topics and they were given business associates to model.

Congratulations to all the students who participated from MC.

New Guidance Secretary

IMG_0564

Loretta Dougherty

The Guidance Department has a new look! On behalf of the Morris Catholic community, we would like to welcome Loretta Dougherty to our staff as the office secretary.

Loretta comes to us from St Matthew The Apostle Parish in Randolph where she worked as the Administrative Assistant. At St Matthew’s, Loretta had the opportunity to put her many skills to good use. While there, Loretta  prepared, coordinated and maintained the data base for the parish, she trained new personnel and, at the same time, maintained the day to day workings of the parish office. Prior to that, Loretta has years of experience in corporate America working in accounting and finance.

We are very fortunate to have someone with Loretta’s skills accept this position. She has a personal experience with the college process having sent two sons off to  Carnegie Melon University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.    She is a knowledgeable, caring and experienced. We are all very excited to have Loretta on board.
